Devon’s Playland revamp has been completed!
The long-awaited revamp of Devon’s Playland officially began on 13 October 2025!
After months of thoughtful planning, we’re creating a fresh, colourful, joy-filled space where children fighting cancer can relax, play, and simply be kids.
FRERE PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL (EAST LONDON)
Devon's Playland at Frere Provincial Hospital
We officially opened Devon’s Playland at Frere Provincial Hospital on 20 September 2024. The occasion was marked by singing, dancing and touching gratitude from the faculties at the Frere Provincial Hospital Paediatric Oncology Ward. We were overwhelmed by the positive response and, as always, dedicate this playland to Devon’s lasting legacy.

Parents’ waiting area and healthcare workers’ kitchen at Steve Biko Academic Hospital
Although paediatric cancer patients are our main beneficiaries, we know that the parents and healthcare workers who support them also need support and comfort. We updated the waiting area the Steve Biko Academic Hospital Paediatric Oncology Unit with new wallpaper and refurbished chairs and refreshed the healthcare workers’ kitchen with wallpaper. Our aims was to create a space where parents and healthcare workers can take a moment to gather themselves, breathe, and harness their strength to keep giving their best to the children.

Devon’s Playland at Steve Biko Academic Hospital
In 2011, we installed a Devon’s Playland as our first project at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital Paediatric Oncology Unit. Since then, we’ve kept the playland clean and updated, just completing a major revamp to keep it safe and exciting for our young cancer patients.
2016/2017
Frere Provincial Hospital
We brought our magic touch to the Frere Provincial Hospital Paediatric Oncology Unit in East London! The oncology units were redecorated in a lively ‘African animal’ theme and the clinic in ‘under the sea’.

Steve Biko Academic Hospital
The Foundation redecorated 2 semi-isolation rooms in an uplifting ‘forest friends’ theme.
2015
Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital
The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Paediatric Oncology Unit received a makeover in the form of:
- Creating, decorating and installing a Devon’s Room
- New wallpaper to revitalise the reception area
- A donor board
- New curtains in the ward
2015 to present

Over the years, the paediatric oncology unit has seen various Devon Vergne Foundation interventions and improvements.
We:
- Decorated the classroom and 2 of the procedure rooms
- Created a Devon’s Playland
- Decorated the princess room, boys’ garage room, and toddler ward.
- Revamped the parents’ waiting area
2015
Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital
The Devon Vergne Foundation decorated the procedure room, added vinyls to cubicle windows, decorated the lounge, and installed a donor board. We created a Devon’s Playland that involved resurfacing the ground, installing artificial grass and wooden riders, repurposing the sponsored wooden jungle gym and swings, paving, and sponsoring bikes. We added a gate and enclosed the area with ClearView fencing (for security purposes).
